KINDLY NOTE: ONLY READ IF YOU ARE AN ILLUSTRATION / DESIGN NERD :)
This piece tested my patience!
I set out with nothing more than a loose thumbnail from my sketchbook. The concept and storytelling evolved slowly. In retrospect, having a clear idea in the beginning would have avoided some of the heartache.
I’ve also had a lot of time to think on what it means to be a mother while working on this piece. I’m not sure this image represents it perfectly. It’s a little too bubblegum sweet and squeaky clean, in comparison to the version of motherhood I live daily. However it’s a step in the right direction for the subject matter I would love to illustrate in the future.
I experimented with a few different brushes and colours before softening my sketch colour to a sepia/burgundy. I’ve liked this along the way, but have found challenges finalising with an impactful image. I also started the piece landscape in Photoshop using my Wacom Cintiq Pro, but switched to working on my Ipad when I became lost in the overall idea… then back to my Wacom to colour. The process has felt clunky and disorganised, however I have learnt so much along the way.
Hair has been a struggle in previous illustrations. I often add loose wispy pencil lines to allude to a hairstyle. The more I learn, I realise character design requires a defined shape. This led me to work with a blocky brush and design the hair as an overall shape, before adding linework to show depth. I’m so happy with the process and excited to work with it in my next piece.
I spent one final session on this file. I thought I was finished, but I kept thinking the flowers in the foreground were floating and didn’t make sense with the rest of the piece. So I removed them and felt like it had a clearer story! I used a bright lemon highlight/glow, as a last attempt to add more impact. I chose yellow because it is opposite purple on the colour wheel. Couldn’t be happier with those glowy little babies :)
I had this one Fine Art Giclée Printed, A2 size on Ilford Galerie Smooth cotton Rag 310gsm.
As an added bonus, she was accepted for the Jacky Winter Gallery group show Assembly available to view July/Aug 2025!!! This is a massive step for me after such a long space between gallery showings.
